(Wheeling, WV) Wheeling Symphony Orchestra (WSO) announces the final concert of the season, A Night in with the WSO – a 90th Anniversary Virtual Concert and Fundraiser, featuring Music Director John Devlin, Musicians of the WSO, and pianist Maxim Lando. The free concert will take place on the WSO’s Facebook and YouTube pages on Thursday, May 28 at 8:00 pm. Donations will be accepted during the performance to continue support the WSO.

Experience the very best of the WSO as we take our 90th Finale Concert and move it online!  Our WSO musicians will present works by Sarah Kirkland Snider, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and more. Rising star Maxim Lando will present solo piano pieces by Tchaikovsky. Join Music Director John Devlin for this one-night-only livestream concert that will celebrate your community in concert!

Seventeen-year-old American pianist Maxim Lando was awarded the prestigious 2020 Gilmore Young Artist Award, and was also recently named Musical America’s New Artist of the Month. He first received international attention in 2017, appearing on the piano bench alongside Lang Lang to perform the parts intended for Mr. Lang’s injured left hand at Carnegie Hall’s Gala Opening Night. Chick Corea joined them for an unprecedented three-pianist version of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Philadelphia Orchestra led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He is the 2019 Artemisia Laureate and winner of the Gold Medal at the 2017 Berlin International Music Competition. He is a proud alumnus of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, and has been a student of Hung-Kuan Chen and Tema Blackstone at Juilliard Pre-College since the age of 11.

“Now, more than ever, people are craving connection and one of the most powerful forces that can provide that for our community is music,” says Music Director John Devlin. “By creatively replicating online the experience that we would have had together in the Capitol, we are excited to give our WSO family the chance to experience great music, share memories from our ninety-year history, and be a part of something together. I look forward to this event, to hearing the talented musicians perform—and to joining them myself as I return to the role of clarinetist for an evening!”

The concert will also serve as a fundraiser for the WSO. “We are excited to announce that, thanks to a core group of loyal donors, we will have matching funds available during the virtual fundraiser,” says Betsy Delk, Interim Executive Director. “The loss of performance revenue has made it challenging for the WSO to cover operating costs, and many in our community would like to extend a helping hand.  This virtual event provides that opportunity to support the work of the WSO.” People will have the opportunity to donate to the WSO during the concert through online donations and by calling the WSO’s offices at 304-232-6191.

Finally, the WSO is proud to partner with Good Mansion Wines for an exclusive “Wine Tasting to Go” to enjoy during the virtual concert & fundraiser.  Pricing is $25 for a single serving (2 wine varieties along with cheese selections) or $40 for two servings (3 wine varieties along with cheese selections). Bottles will be either 750ml or 375ml. Each kit comes with a sweet thank you from the WSO. Quantities are limited, so order promptly by contacting GMW at 304-233-2632. A healthy portion of the proceeds from every sale will be donated to the WSO.
