Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra Announces New Music Director for Philharmonic in Advance of Annual Bluegrass BBQ
(Wheeling, WV) Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra (WSYO) announces its next Music Director for the Philharmonic, Benjamin Podolski. Mr. Podolski has been a strings instructor for Ohio County Schools for 30 years. He is a graduate of the former Buckeye North High School in Brilliant, OH, and was a member of the Wheeling Youth Symphony. The WYSO is thrilled to have Mr. Podolski make his first appearance at its annual fundraiser WSYO Bluegrass BBQ this Sunday October 1st.
Mr. Podolski is a cum laude graduate of Youngstown State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education, and a Master in Music Performance degree. He has served as assistant concertmaster with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra; in addition, he was Music Director and Co-Conductor of the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2003-04 as well as 2008-2012. Mr. Podolski was chosen as the winner of the National Federation of High School Music Association Music Educator Award at the state level in 2003, and was the regional winner of this award in 2004. He also has been chosen as Teacher of the Year for Ohio County Schools in 1996-97, and was West Virginia Chapter of ASTA Outstanding String Teacher of the Year in 2000.
“I’m looking forward to working with the Youth Symphony again,” says Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra Philharmonic Music Director Benjamin Podolski. “I think having more opportunities for a student to play an instrument in an ensemble is always a good thing. For some of the students, this is the only opportunity they have to do that. The kids have a good time during rehearsals, but the concerts show that they’ve actually put in some hard work.”
The annual fundraiser WSYO Bluegrass BBQ will be held at Hess Shelter, Oglebay Park on Sunday October 1, 2017 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. This year will feature local bands: Marsh Wheeling String Band, Out of the Blue, and Cabin Fever String Band; BBQ food, catered by Mason Dixon BBQ Co, and gift baskets for raffle. Wheeling Hospital, Dinsmore & Shohl LLP, and Main Street Bank have graciously sponsored the event.
This fundraiser helps raise money for the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra to continue its tradition of providing a tuition free opportunity for its members and to enable them to perform free concerts to the public each year.
