Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra Includes Broadway, Pop Hits, and Classical Favorites at Annual Spring Concert
(Wheeling, WV) Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra (WSYO) announces its annual spring concert, featuring both the Sinfonietta and the Philharmonic orchestras. The performance will be held Monday, May 13 at 7:00 pm at J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center at Wheeling Park High School in Wheeling, WV. This concert is free and open to the public.
The Sinfonietta, composed of middle school aged students, is co-led by both the band and string teachers from Triadelphia Middle School in Wheeling and will perform Johannes Brahms’s La Rejouissance, George Fredrick Handel’s Hungarian Dance No. 5, and Panic and the Disco!’s High Hopes. “It has been a busy season and the students are hard at work,” says Rayce Leib, co-conductor of the Sinfonietta. “We are preparing repertoire from the baroque and romantic periods to modern contemporary genres and are excited to share them with you!”
The Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra will deliver four challenging but “popular” selections. “The students will demonstrate their continued progress but also entertain with works that are familiar to fans of symphonic music everywhere,” says Ben Podolski, conductor of the Philharmonic. “Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles is filled with plenty of energetic pomp and circumstance. Cellists Avery Knutson and Lydia Kellas have accepted the challenge of performing the first movement of Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto. The first movement of Mozart’s well-known Eine Kleine Nachtmusik will be sure to engage audiences, and finally songs, including Popular, from Stephen Schwartz’ Broadway hit musical will be featured in Highlights from Wicked.”
The concert is free, but donations are appreciated to help the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra continue its tradition of providing a tuition-free opportunity for its members and to enable them to perform free concerts to the public each year.
